When our 4-year old grandson came to visit us in Sayulita last winter, he had the time of his life.  He learned quite a few words in Spanish, saw dancing horses and roosters running about, tried to body surf with our son in the ocean, ate at several restaurants including early morning with his dad, bought a fish longer than he was tall that was then cut up and cooked on our grill, and generally enjoyed the color and life of the town.

A yoga teacher from our area spent two weeks near Sayulita teaching; on town visits with her students, they explored the boutiques and eateries and promised to return.

We met a young man who seemed to get a different experience from his visit.  Mostly, he surfed the beach and drank his way from one bar to another, not rising until noon each day.

We have many friends who own homes with ocean or valley views and are either seasonal or almost fulltime residents. Probably 90% are over 50, so they have reasonable spending money.  These folks, along with their family, friends and tenants, make up many of the customers of restaurants and shops.   We also have younger friends with children in school.

These are just a few examples of the diverse visitors or residents who come to enjoy Sayulita.  Adding to this mix is the local population of native-born residents, who work for or own the many stores, restaurants and outdoor attractions.  They have had a hand in the rapid growth of Sayulita, even though much of this growth has happened without much oversight.

Each group views the town differently and sees a different future for Sayulita.  Of course, anyone who spends a great deal of time in Sayulita is more concerned about how the town will grow than those who make short vacations here.  How the future evolves will determine the number and type of visitors who will come in the years to come.   Obviously, the opinion of a casa owner might be very different from the view of a bar owner.  GPS tries to support growth that is arrived at by consensus; most of our goals are quite obvious and supported by almost everyone.

From my perspective, I think if we close our eyes and imagine the Sayulita of ten years from now, we can agree on many things and find ways to get there.

Occasionally, there are issues that have divided opinions.  Is it possible to come to a reasonable consensus?  If the U.S. Congress can't avoid a default crisis with a deadline looming, we know that reaching agreement in a diverse town can also be difficult.

A group of town leaders finally did get together last season and initated or supported new systems for traffic, parking, and crime.  There's much more to do.  Along with other GPS board members, I attended those meetings.  Although my Spanish is still very deficient after seven seasons of classes, I was able to understand enough to know that these folks had a common purpose.  They met several times, were respectful of each other, and came to agreement.  Those meetings were the best examples of seeking reasonable, common solutions.  Although actions and results can come slowly in Mexico, they are coming!  I'm sure that Grupo Pro Sayulita will continue to support these joint efforts.

¿QUIEN DETERMINARA el FUTURO de NUESTRO PUEBLO?

Cuando nuestro nieto de 4 años vino a visitarnos en Sayulita último invierno, él tuvo el tiempo de su vida. Aprendió que redactan en español, el serrote que baila caballos y gallos que corre acerca de, tratado al oleaje del cuerpo con nuestro hijo en el océano, comió en varios restaurantes inclusive mañana temprana con su padre, compró un pez más largo que fue alto que entonces fue cortado en pedazos y cocinó en nuestra parrilla, y disfrutó generalmente del color y la vida del pueblo.

Un maestro del yoga de nuestra área pasó dos semanas cerca de enseñar de Sayulita; en visitas de pueblo con sus estudiantes, ellos exploraron las boutiques y los restaurantes y prometieron regresar.

Encontramos a un joven que pareció conseguir una experiencia diferente de su visita. En su mayor parte, él hizo surf la playa y bebió su manera de una barra a otro, no subiendo hasta el mediodía cada día.

Tenemos a muchos amigos que poseen casas con océano o el valle ve y es o residentes estacionales o casi a tiempo completo. Probablemente 90% es más de 50, así que tienen el gasto razonable dinero. Estas gente, junto con su familia, los amigos y los arrendatarios, hacen muchos de a los clientes de restaurantes y tiendas. Nosotros también tenemos a amigos más jóvenes con niños en la escuela.

Estos son sólo unos ejemplos de los visitantes o los residentes diversos que vienen a disfrutar de Sayulita. Añadir a esta combinación es la población local de residentes de nacimiento, que trabaja para o posee las muchas tiendas, los restaurantes y atracciones al aire libre. Han tenido parte en el crecimiento rápido de Sayulita, aunque mucho de este crecimiento haya sucedido sin mucho descuido.

Cada grupo ve el pueblo de forma distinta y ve un futuro diferente para Sayulita. Por supuesto, cualquiera que pasa mucho tiempo en Sayulita está más preocupado acerca de cómo el pueblo crecerá que los que hacen licencias cortas aquí. Cómo el futuro evoluciona determinará el número y el tipo de visitantes que entrarán los años para venir. Obviamente, la opinión de un propietario de casa quizás sea muy diferente de la vista de un propietario de barra. Grupo Pro Sayulita trata de apoyar el crecimiento que es llegado en por consenso; la mayor parte de nuestros objetivos son bastante obvios y apoyados por casi todos.

De mi perspectiva, yo pienso si cerramos los ojos e imaginamos el Sayulita de diez años de ahora, podemos convenir en que muchas cosas y encontrarse que maneras de llegar.

Ocasionalmente, hay asuntos que han dividido opiniones. ¿Es posible venir a un consenso razonable? Si EEUU Congreso no puede evitar una crisis predefinida con una fecha tope que asoma, sabemos que llegando a un acuerdo en un pueblo diverso también puede ser difícil.

Un grupo de líderes de pueblo por último se juntó última temporada y initated o nuevos sistemas apoyados para el tráfico, para estacionamiento, y para el crimen. Hay mucho hacer más. Junto con otros miembros GPS de la tabla, yo asistí esas reuniones. Aunque mi español sea todavía muy deficiente después de siete temporadas de clases, yo pude comprender suficiente en saber que estas gente tuvieron un propósito común. Encontraron varias veces, fueron respetuoso de uno al otro, y vinieron al acuerdo. Esas reuniones fueron los mejores ejemplos de buscar soluciones razonables y comunes. ¡Aunque acciones y resultados puedan venir lentamente en México, ellos vienen! Estoy seguro que Grupo Pro Sayulita continuará apoyar estos esfuerzos conjuntos.
