Last month, my school here in Sayulita - Costa Verde International School - decided to take the 4th, 5th and 6th graders on a field trip to the Volcano named Ceboruco. The drive to the volcano from Sayulita takes about three hours. We drove north through lava fields, saw many types of cactus and agave fields, and drove into the mountains.

When we arrived at Ceboruco, we listened to the rules about the campsite from our science teacher, Mr. Steve. Some of the rules were not to leave your trash on the ground and don't put your tents close to rocks. After we talked about more low impact camping rules Mr. Steve showed us the bathrooms. The bathrooms were a trench, dug by teachers and parents who drove up from Sayulita the night before.The reason why we used a trench was because we are learning the importance of having a low impact on the environment; it was the best decision since we had 31 people.

When we were finished unpacking and choosing our tent mates we went on a little hike. We went to a couple of fumeroles on the side of the crater where we set up our tents. Fumeroles are heated water coming from the earth's crust. The students touched the steam and it was REALLY hot. After we hiked to the fumeroles we went back to the campsite to make dinner. We grouped into teams and made lots of soups. Even though we had the same ingredients, each soup tasted different. They were all delicious! When we finished eating dinner we gathered wood and made a campfire. We roasted marshmallows and we showed the parents and other kids our skits about volcanoes. It was really windy, and after an hour we brushed our teeth and got ready to go to bed.

When we woke up it felt really early. We got dressed and ate cereal and croissants for breakfast. We took down our tents and left to go for the three-hour hike. We saw lots of huge rocks and black sand on the way to the volcano. We walked through the other two newer craters of the volcano. It was really dry and the plants weren't as lush as in Sayulita. We arrived at the volcano core and sat down to eat the lunch we'd packed ourselves. The core was a cone and had lots of steaming fumeroles. When we finished eating we hiked back to the cars where we had another snack. We were tired and slept as we drove back home. We arrived back at Sayulita at 6:00. It was the best field trip ever!

El mes pasado, mi escuela aquí en Sayulita - Costa Verde Escuela Internacional - decidió llevar a los alumnos de los niveles cuarto, quinto y sexto en un viaje de campo al Volcán Ceboruco. El camino para el volcán de Sayulita dura alrededor de tres horas. Condujimos hacia al norte a través de campos de lava y vimos campos de cactus y agave al camino a las montañas.

Cuando llegamos al Ceboruco hemos escuchamos las reglas sobre el camping de nuestro profesor de ciencias, el Sr. Steve. Algunas de las reglas no fueron: no dejar su basura en el suelo y no poner las tiendas cerca de las rocas. Después de hablar de las normas de camping de bajo impacto, Sr. Steve nos mostró los baños. Los baños eran una trinchera, cavada por los profesores y los padres que habían viajado allá la noche anterior. The razón por qué utilizamos una trinchera era porque estamos aprendiendo la importancia de tener un bajo impacto sobre el medio ambiente; fue la mejor decisión, ya que había 31 personas.

Cuando terminamos de desempacar y elegir nuestros compañeros de tienda, fuimos a una pequeña excursión. Fuimos a un par de fumarols en el lado del cráter donde armamos nuestras tiendas. Fumarolas se calientan agua proveniente de la corteza terrestre. Los estudiantes tocó el vapor y fue muy caliente. Después caminamos a la fumarolas regresamos al campamento para hacer la cena. Se agruparon en equipos y hecho un montón de sopas. A pesar de que teníamos los mismos ingredientes, cada una sopa de sabor diferente. Todos estaban deliciosos! Cuando terminamos de cenar nos reunimos madera e hizo una fogata. Nos malvaviscos tostados y mostramos a los padres y otros niños nuestras parodias sobre volcanoes.It fue mucho viento, y después de una hora nos cepillado los dientes y se dispuso a irse a la cama.

Cuando desperté sentí muy temprano. Nos vestimos y comió cereal y croissants para desayuno. Tomamos por nuestras tiendas de campaña y la izquierda para ir en la caminata de tres horas. Vimos un montón de grandes rocas y arena negro en el camino hacia el volcán.Caminamos por los otros dos cráteres más reciente del volcán. Fue muy seca y las plantas no eran tan exuberante como en Sayulita. Llegamos a la base del volcán y se sentó a comer el almuerzo nos habíamos embalado. El núcleo era un cono y había un montón de humeantes fumarolas. Cuando terminamos de comer caminamos de vuelta a los coches en los que había otro snack. Estábamos cansados y se durmió mientras nos dirigíamos a casa. Llegamos de vuelta en Sayulita a las 6:00. Fue el mejor viaje de campo nunca!
