One of the luxuries of spending part of the year in Sayulita is the opportunity for reading. Though I keep myself busy and involved within the community, I do have more time to read and occasionally steal a lazy morning in bed reading in my pajamas, until the hour makes it seem indecent to do so. Each winter I have read something a little meaty, maybe a book I wouldn't have tackled while in the North because of its length or subject matter. I have reread Kafka and Edgar Allen Poe and read for the first time Gone with the Wind, Lonesome Dove and Dr. Zhivago.

Having just finished a weighty and somewhat cumbersome story about William Dampier, a seventeenth century pre-Darwin explorer, naturalist and pirate, I took off for the Librería Sayulita, the Sayulita bookstore, hoping for a Clive Cussler, to lighten things up for awhile. The bookstore is a hub of activity, with a great espresso bar, Spanish classes and internet access, as well as the three rooms of used books. That day, I had a wonderful café Americano with one of the owners, Nancy, and came home with two Clive Cusslers, a.k.a., guilty pleasures. (OK, if I'm really confessing, last year I plowed through all four books of the Twilight series in rapid succession.)

The bookstore has this great policy: bring books to (or back to) the store and receive a percentage discount on a new purchase; one of the owners will create a very official account for you on a bookmark. Ed, Nancy's husband, says that they get books back again and again, especially current popular titles. I brought the Cusslers back after Dirk Pitt had again vanquished ever-more diabolical villains on many international fronts; I needed one more book before our time in Sayulita would run out. Enjoying the conversation with Ed and the Spanish teacher more than my book search, I was pleased when I saw a title by Amy Tan, the same author who had written The Joy Luck Club, which also became a successful movie. Leah, the Spanish teacher exclaimed: "The Kitchen God's Wife; I want to read that!" I promised Leah that I would leave it with her.

Life is a quirky series of coincidences, if sometimes subtle. Returning to the bookstore with "The Kitchen God's Wife," Nancy leant me a book she had just finished, a novel about finding the grave and bones of Jesus Christ. It turned out to be a good read, besides having been written by a professor from a university in my home state in the U.S. The Amy Tan, I left with Nancy for Leah even though I had about 50 pages to go and it sounded like the book would go through Nancy first before landing back with Leah. Last weekend, I was at the library by our northern cabin (in the U.S.) using the internet and it popped into my head that they just might have a copy of "The Kitchen God's Wife." S, T, Tr, To, Ti, Ta....Tan!

Summer bookstore hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 9am - 1pm. Spanish classes continue in the evenings and the coffee is still flowing. New for summer is Vietnamese iced coffee. La Libreria Sayulita is on calle Miramar #17A, on the north side of the bridge; follow the signs.

La vida secreta de los libros

Uno de los lujos de pasar parte del año en Sayulita es la oportunidad de leer. Aunque me mantengo ocupada y participo en las actividades de la comunidad, siempre tengo más tiempo para leer.  De vez en cuando robo una mañana tranquila, y me quedo en la cama, leyendo en mi pijama, hasta la hora hace que parezca indecente para hacerlo. Cada invierno leo algo un poco pesado, tal vez un libro que hubiera dejado en el norte debido a su longitud o tema. He releído Kafka y Edgar Allan Poe y leí por primera vez Lo que el viento, El Paloma Solitario y Dr. Zhivago.
Acabo de terminar una historia bien pesada y engorrosa de William Dampier, un explorador, naturalista y pirata del siglo XVII, y buscaba algo más ligero a leer, tal vez algo de Clive Cussler, para aclarar la mente un poco. La Librería Sayulita es un centro de actividad con una barra de café, clases de español y acceso al internet, así como las tres salas de libros usados. Ese día, tomé un maravilloso café americano con una de los propietarios, Nancy, y volví a casa con dos Clive Cussler's, también conocido como placeres culpables. (OK, mientras estoy confesando, el año pasado devoré los cuatro libros de la saga de Crepúsculo en una sucesión rápida.)

La librería tiene una gran política: traer libros (o regresarlos) a la tienda y recibir un porcentaje de descuento en una compra nueva, y uno de los propietarios creará una cuenta muy oficial en un marcador, que se guarda el cliente. Ed, el esposo de Nancy, dice que recibe de vuelta los mismos libros muchas veces, especialmente los títulos populares en curso. Llevé conmigo los libros de Cussler, después de haber leído de los nuevos, cada vez más diabólicos villanos de muchos frentes internacionales, a quienes había eliminado Dirk Pitt, y buscaba un libro más antes de regresar a los EEUU. Disfruté de la conversación con Ed y la profesora de español más que mi búsqueda del libro, y me alegraba al ver un título de Amy Tan, la autora de The Joy Luck Club, luego convertido en una exitosa película. Leah, la maestra de español, exclamó: "¡The Kitchen God's Wife, quiero leerlo!" Le prometí a Leah que lo dejara con ella.

La vida es una serie peculiar de coincidencias, a veces sútiles. Volviendo a la librería con The Kitchen God's Wife, Nancy me prestó un libro que acababa de terminar, una novela sobre la búsqueda de la tumba y los huesos de JesuCristo. Resultó ser un muy buen libro, además de haber sido escrito por un profesor de una universidad en mi estado de residencia en los EE.UU. El libro de Amy Tan dejé con Nancy para Leah, a pesar de que me quedaban unas 50 páginas para leer, y creo que el libro pasaría por Nancy antes de llegar a Leah. El fin de semana pasado, estaba en la biblioteca por nuestra cabaña del norte (en los EE.UU.) para usar el internet y se me vino a la cabeza que podría obtener una copia de The Kitchen God's Wife. S, T, Tr, To, Ta, Ti, ....¡Tan!
