When I first met a few Grupo Pro Sayulita volunteers a few years ago, and then went to my first GPS meeting, I had no idea how involved I would eventually become. Nor did I plan on being a weekly columnist for El Sayulero. When it was first mentioned, no one wanted to do it, so I was left with the duty. Well, I've written over 80 columns by now, and gradually, personal things come out - about my family, house, profession, and perhaps an occasional political or philosophical view of life. I read the other week about Andy Rooney's death and wonder if I'm just doing a local version of his funny way of putting something into perspective. Of course, whatever I might chat about in the column should eventually lead the reader back to thinking about Grupo Pro Sayulita.

For the past two years, I've served as President of GPS but as I've mentioned before, we have lots of volunteers and we work on projects as a team.  For the GPS-El Sayulero column, my views do not necessarily reflect the views of others (that's one reason for my name being on the byline). Occasionally I can report factually on the many activities we do and sometimes, I'm simply a cheerleader for our community as I urge people to participate-- not only because the town needs some help, but also because participating can be fun. We meet lots of fellow residents and often helping can be very rewarding. The volunteers who work together (I am only one of seven board members and there are many regular committee volunteers) make up a great team. I truly believe that we have accomplished a lot in the past two years; we can be proud of that, but there's more to do.

However, my feeling is that after two years of serving as President, as well as writing for El Sayulero, that I might have used up my creative ideas and enthusiasm (and welcome?), and perhaps it's time for someone else to take over. I always enjoy variety and I happen to believe in term limits (you see, a little politics sneaks in). After all, if we don't rotate, we won't get the benefit of someone else's creativity, skills and management ideas.

If you think you are that person, please let us know. It's not that I'm going to be set out to pasture like a retired race horse; I have lots of art projects going -- and it's time to push a bit harder in those directions. We have a little bit of time before the annual election-- so let's look around for some additional volunteers and new energy!

Un Reflejo

Cuando hace unos años conocí por primera vez a algunos voluntarios del Grupo Pro Sayulita, y fui a mi primera reunión de GPS, no tenía la menor idea de lo envuelta que eventualmente me vería . Ni tampoco planee el llegar a ser una columnista semanal para El Sayulero. Cuando fue mencionado por primera vez, nadie quería hacerlo, por lo cual me dejaron a mi con ese deber. Pues bien, hasta ahora he escrito probablemente más de 80 columnas , y gradualmente van saliendo cosas personales, acerca de mi familia, casa, profesión, y quizás una ocasional visión política o filosófica de la vida. Leí la otra semana acerca de la muerte de Andy Rooney y me he cuestionado si estoy creando una versión local acerca de la graciosa forma que el tenía de poner algo en perspectiva. Por supuesto, lo que sea que pueda haber platicado acerca de ello en mi columna, debería, eventualmente, llevar a los lectores a pensar otra vez en el Grupo Pro Sayulita.

Durante los dos últimos años, he servido como presidente de GPS pero como he mencionado antes, tenemos muchos voluntarios y trabajamos todos juntos como un grupo. Para la columna de GPS en el Sayulero, mis puntos de vista no necesariamente reflejan los puntos de vista de otros, (esa es la razón por la cual mi nombre está junto a esas líneas) Ocasionalmente puedo reportar hechos relativos a las muchas actividades que realizamos y, algunas veces, soy simplemente una porrista para nuestra comunidad mientras trato de empujar a que la gente participe, no solo porque el pueblo necesita ayuda, sino también porque participar puede ser algo divertido. Conocemos a muchos compañeros residentes y muy seguido el ayudar puede ser algo muy reconfortante. Los voluntarios que trabajan juntos (Yo soy una de siete miembros del comité y hay muchos voluntarios regulares) crean un gran equipo. Realmente creo que hemos logrado mucho en los pasados dos años, podemos estar orgullosos de eso, pero aún hay mas que hacer.

Sin embargo, mi sentir es que luego de dos años de servir como Presidente, a la vez que escribir para El Sayulero, tal vez ya he usado todas mis creativas ideas y entusiasmo (y la bienvenida?), y tal vez es tiempo de que alguien mas se ocupe del cargo. Siempre he disfrutado la variedad y he llegado a creer en el fin de los términos (ya ves, se filtra un poco de política). Después de todo, si no rotamos, no tomaremos ventaja del beneficio que puede aportar la creatividad de otra persona, sus habilidades e ideas de gestión.

Si tu piensas que eres esa persona, por favor déjanos saberlo. No es que me voy a retirar a un campo de pastura como un viejo caballo de carrera; Tengo muchos proyectos de arte y es tiempo de poner un poco mas de esfuerzo en esa dirección. Tenemos un poco mas de tiempo antes de la elección anual, busquemos entonces alrededor por algunos extra voluntarios y nuevas energías.
