We've had just two weekly meetings so far, but we are off to a fast start.  For our first two meetings, newly elected delegado Hector Pína joined us.  Grupo Pro Sayulita is a volunteer community organization that supports programs to help make the town a better place to live and visit.  Only by working with town leaders will we achieve progress, so it was encouraging to hear how much Hector was impressed by all of our activities.

Although I always try to make an agenda for our meetings, this being Sayulita, surprises are more the norm than not.  During our first meeting, when all I expected was an introduction or update summary of various committees, a small but very important issue came up - the danger of not having topes in front of the Primaria School.  When the road was paved last year, several people mentioned that vehicles were speeding way too fast in front of the school, but nothing got done.  At our first meeting, Hector mentioned that the labor was available and permission had been given to build the topes if the materials were paid for.  Resident/volunteer Peter Achtem quickly offered to pay half, and there was an instant consensus for Grupo Pro Sayulita to match the amount.  (We need a formal board vote, but three board members were there and we know that's not the issue; the amount is reasonable- just $250).  We think topes will also go in front of Costa Verde.  What a pleasure to see something happen quickly (I hope it gets installed within a week or two); who knows, it could save a child's life.

I sense that closer communication between residents, volunteers and town leaders will continue.  Much was started last season by town leaders working together to tackle various problems.  With the recent elections, there will be new people in local and regional government positions-- but already we are off to a positive start.  My guess is that we can build upon last season's foundation.  Grupo Pro Sayulita is here to support positive steps for the town; we are not a substitute for government investment, but we can fill the gaps.

Un Principio Positivo

Siempre trato de preparar una agenda para nuestras reuniones en Sayulita, las sorpresas no son más la norma. Durante nuestra primera reunión, esperaba un resumen de introducción y una actualización de varios comités, y un pequeño pero muy importante asunto surgió - el peligro de no tener topes en la calle a fuera de la escuela primaria.
