Why ever leave our lovely little Sayulita? There really aren't many reasons to do so, but those pesky bureaucratic details of the lives of residents do necessitate at least a couple of trips to Bucerias during the season. Bucerias, the next major town to the south of Sayulita on Highway 200, is about halfway between Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita. After visits to the bank, the immigration office (to renew visas) and the municipal office (to pay property taxes) and much standing in line, my husband agreed to a "reward" visit to the spice store, The Little Bee. Nancy, who had come along for the same pesky bureaucratic errands, showed me around the smallish shop; I was awestruck. The Little Bee is on the lateral road on the ocean side, right off the main highway, near the center of town, just past the main intersection and is combination spice, dried herb, and bulk, dried food shop. The shelves on one wall are stacked with rows and rows of packages of dried herbs; all carefully labeled and many more than I had ever heard of. The piles of dried beans and colorful dried spices reminded me of the spice markets in the souks of Morocco.

I had to circle around the store a few times, taking it all in before I could make any selections. Nancy and I both took home a selection of assorted dried fruit and a few other items; I stocked up on liter bottles of vanilla as the price was the best I've ever seen. (I take Mexican vanilla north as gifts to friends and family in the U.S. Pure maple syrup comes south, vanilla goes north...) Bucerias is an easy trip from Sayulita either by car or bus; The Little Bee is a rewarding destination for any level of food enthusiast.

La Abejita

¿Por qué salimos de nuestro pequeño y encantador pueblo, Sayulita? Realmente no hay muchas razones para hacerlo, pero esos molestos detalles burocráticos de la vida de los residentes requieren por lo menos un par de viajes a Bucerías durante la temporada. Bucerías, la próxima comunidad importante al sur de Sayulita en la carretera 200, está a medio camino entre Puerto Vallarta y Sayulita. Después de las visitas al banco, la oficina de inmigración (para renovar las visas), la oficina municipal (a pagar impuestos de la propiedad) y después de haber pasado mucho tiempo haciendo cola, mi esposo estaba de acuerdo con una "recompensa" - una visita a la tienda de especias, La Abejita. Bucerías es un viaje fácil de Sayulita ya sea en coche o autobús yLa Abejita es un destino que vale la pena para cualquier nivel de entusiasta de la comida.
