When Barbara and I first arrived in Sayulita to spend our winters, we started to take Spanish lessons with Liliana at the bookstore. Taking Spanish classes was also the social thing to do - we met many of our friends at those classes. They were fun, although an older adult "student" class meant that our minds were no longer ‘sponges' and that many things had to be repeated. I joked with Liliana that first day that she and I would grow old together. I tried to convey to her how difficult it was for me to learn a language.

For the first time, with Liliana's help, I started to learn a foreign language without the torture of my youth. I had struggled through seven years of French in high school and college and so help me, I didn't even remember that verbs were conjugated. Of course I'm an artist and I soar visually, but unbeknownst to me, I had and still have a learning disability when it comes to audio tasks like speaking foreign languages. I even needed help with English. But as an adult, I assumed that I would at least be able to surpass the speaking abilities of a 4-year-old child - my goals were very modest!

Slowly but surely we learned basic Spanish vocabulary:  present tense, past tense, imperatives, the conditional and the big one - subjunctives. With my disability, my writing was much better than my hearing, while Barbara also passed me in conversation. However, I did manage to learn. With the need to talk to various contractors who were finishing our house, especially when it came to money issues, the contractors slowed down drastically so I would understand the issues, and in turn, they showed much patience as I talked in 1/3 time with a simple vocabulary.

Last year, when I volunteered to be president of GPS, I worried that my faulty Spanish might be a reason not to take the position. After all, we invite Mexican and foreign residents into GPS, and I didn't want to seem like it was just a "gringo club". I thought it was important that we expand our efforts to reach out to the local residents and local authorities. On the other hand, I thought, here was an opportunity to practice and improve my Spanish.

Often this past winter, when an important issue would be on the agenda for some sort of meeting, I would wake up at 5:30 (la madrugada) in the morning and I would talk slowly but almost fluently - to myself. Unfortunately at the actual meeting, the pressure of speaking in front of others would erode my confidence, and since there was always a Spanish speaker who was superior in English to my Spanish, I would retreat to just speaking English and letting my words be translated by someone else.

It's frustrating not to be fluent; Americans should consider how hard it is for new (older) residents to learn English, before they pass English-only laws. In Mexico, I still appreciate any governmental form or sign that has been translated for us!
I reflect on this to make two points. One is to congratulate GPS's Education Committee and about 50 volunteers who teach English after school to the Primaria (elementary school) students. Sayulita kids who speak English will have many more opportunities and less of a struggle when they grow up. And second, learning Spanish as an adult is a fun process. If I can learn, anyone can. I recommend that you take lessons. There are several places offering classes and you'll meet wonderful people.

PROBLEMAS de IDIOMA por Eric Rudd

Cuando llegamos por primera vez en Sayulita para pasar los inviernos, Barbara y yo comenzamos a tomar clases de español con Liliana en la librería. Tomando clases de español también fue una cosa social-encontramos muchos de nuestros amigos en esas clases. Fueron divertidas, aunque una clase de adultos mayores significó que nuestras mentes ya no fueron "esponjas" y que muchas cosas tuvieron que ser repetidas. Bromeé con Liliana el primer día que ella y yo nos envejeceríamos juntos. Traté de comunicarle cuán dificil fue para mí aprender un idioma.

Por primera vez, con la ayuda de Liliana, yo comencé a aprender un idioma extranjero sin la tortura de mi juventud; había luchado por siete años con el francés en el instituto y el colegio y ni recuerdo que verbos fueron conjugados. Por supuesto, soy artista y yo me aprendo visualmente pero más desconocido a mí, yo tuve y todavía tengo una incapacidad de aprendizaje en cuanto a tareas de audio como aprender idiomas extranjeros. Debía ayudar aún con inglés. ¡Pero como un adulto, yo asumí que podría por lo menos superar las capacidades parlantes de un niño de 4 años - mis objetivos fueron muy modestos!

Lentamente pero sin duda nosotros aprendimos vocabulario español básico, el presente, el pasado, imperativo, condicional y el grande- subjuntivo. Con mi incapacidad, mi escritura fue mejor que mi audición, mientras Barbara también me pasó en conversación. Sin embargo, yo logré aprender. Con la necesidad de hablar con varios contratistas que terminaban nuestra casa, especialmente cuando vino a asuntos de dinero, los contratistas fueron más despacio drásticamente tan comprendería los asuntos, y en cambio, ellos mostraron mucha paciencia como hablé en 1/3 tiempo con un vocabulario sencillo.

El año pasado, cuando me ofrecí a ser presidente de GPS, yo preocupé que mi español defectuoso quizás sea una razón para no tomar la posición. Después de todo, nosotros invitamos mexicano y a residentes extranjeros en el GPS, y yo no quise parecer fue sólo un club de "gringo". Y pensé que fue importante que expandamos nuestros esfuerzos de llegar a los residentes de la zona y a administración local. Por otro lado, yo pensé, aquí estuve una oportunidad de practicar y mejorar mi español.

A menudo este invierno pasado, cuando un asunto importante estaría en el orden del día para encontrar de algún tipo, yo me despertaría en 5:30 (madrugada) por la mañana y yo hablaría lentamente pero casi con fluidez -a yo mismo. Desafortunadamente en la reunión verdadera, la presión de hablar delante de otros se erosionarían mi confianza, y desde que había siempre un orador español que fue superior en inglés que estuve en español, yo me retiraría a hablar sólo inglés y permitir mis palabras son traducidas por otra persona.

Frustra para no ser con soltura; norteamericanos deben considerar cuán duro es para nuevo (más viejo) residentes para aprender inglés, antes que pasen inglés-Unico leyes. ¡En México, yo todavía aprecio alguna forma o el signo gubernamentales que ha sido traducido para nosotros!

Reflejo en esto hacer dos puntos. Uno es de felicitar el Comité de la Educación de GPS y aproximadamente 50 voluntarios que enseñan inglés extraescolar a los estudiantes de Primaria. Sayulita bromea hablando inglés tendrá muchas más oportunidades y menos lucha cuando crecen. Y segundo, aprendiendo que español como un adulto es un proceso divertido. Si puedo aprender, cualquiera puede. Recomiendo que tome lecciones. Hay varios lugares que enseñan y usted encontrará a personas maravillosas.
