1. Where were you born and where did you study?
I was born in my mother's bedroom in Ninga, Manitoba, a village of fifty people. I studied to be an aesthetician in Brandon, Manitoba. Later I worked with my mother, who owns a café and pub, gift shop and spa, and she taught me the dynamics of opening and running a business.

¿Dónde naciste y qué estudiaste?
Nací en la recámara de mi madre en Ninga, Manitoba, una aldea de cincuenta personas. Después de terminar la escuela secundaria, estudié para ser esteticista. Luego trabajé con mi mamá, quien es dueña de un café y pub, una tienda de adornos y un spa, y me enseñó todo lo de iniciar y ser propietaria de un negocio.

2. When did you first come to Mexico?
I first came to the Baja Peninsula when I was 10 on vacation with my parents. We visited every year after that to many different parts of Mexico, both coasts, the Yucatan, and I first visited Sayulita in 2005.

¿Cuándo viniste a México por primera vez?
Vine con mis padres de vacaciones por primera vez cuando tenía diez años. Visitamos México todos los años y viajábamos a diferentes partes, las dos costas, el Yucatán, y vine a Sayulita por primera vez en 2005.

3. When did you decide to move here?
Three years ago. I took a lifeguard and surf instructor's course on Vancouver Island in the summer of 2007, taught surfing there, then applied to and was accepted at a North American-based surfing school in Sayulita.

¿Cuándo decidiste mudarte aquí?
Hace tres años. Estudié para ser salvavida y maestra del surfeo en una escuela en la Isla Vancouver en el verano de 2007, luego trabajé allá y me mudé a Sayulita para trabajar en una escuela de surfeo aquí en Sayulita.

4. Family history?
My parents and two older sisters are landlocked in Manitoba, but they always come to visit for three months in winter. This year my father is going to start building a house with the eventual goal of moving here.

Mis padres y mis dos hermanas mayores viven sin litorales en Manitoba, pero siempre vienen a Sayulita por tres meses en el invierno. Este año my padre va a empezar a construir una casa con el objetivo final de mudarse aquí.

5. What is your favourite thing about Sayulita?
It is NOT the loud music from the plaza until 5am, it's the fresh fruit juices, warm climate, culture and salsa.

¿Cuál es lo que más te gusta de Sayulita?
NO es la música ruidosa de la plaza hasta las cinco de la madrugada, son los jugos de fruta fresca, el clima, la cultura, y la salsa.

6. What changes have you seen in the town since first coming to Sayulita five years ago?
The biggest change I've noticed is the increase in the level of consciousness of the people regarding cleanliness, garbage pickup, and treatment of animals. Another thing is that our northern culture is a bad example, as young people come down here just to party, and the young Mexicans see this without learning about the consequences and responsibilities, e.g.,
drinking and driving without having a designated driver.

¿Qué cambios has visto desde tu primera visita a Sayulita hace cinco años?
El cambio más obvio es el aumento en la consciencia de la gente en cuanto a la limpieza, recoger basura y el tratamiento de los animales. Otra cosa es que nuestra cultura del norte es un mal ejemplo para los jóvenes mexicanos, como los jóvenes de allá vienen aquí sólo para festejar, y los mexicanos ven este conducto sin aprender las consecuencias y responsiblidades, por ejemplo, el tomar y manejar sin tener un conductor que no toma alcohol.

7. What improvements would you like to see in the town?
More alternative activities in the evening for young adults, such as organized recreational activities and facilities, to refocus and aspire them to see beyond the tourism culture.

¿Qué mejoras te gustaría ver en el pueblo?
Más actividades alternativas para los jóvenes por las tardes, tales como actividades de recreo para alentarlos y enfocarlos ver más allá de la cultura del turismo.

8. Future plans - will you stay or go?
Mexico is in my future as well as other endeavours in Canada and other parts of the world; I feel like I want Mexico to be my home base.

¿Y para el futuro, qué planes tienes?
México está en mi futuro, tanto como otros planes que tengo para Canadá y otras partes del mundo. Me gustaría tener México como mi base de hogar.
