Where were you born and when did you come to Sayulita? I was born in Colima. I came to Sayulita 14 years ago because I heard there were more opportunities here and better pay. My sister lived in San Ignacio and I came to visit her and look for work. I have been living in San Ignacio ever since.

¿Dónde naciste y cuándo llegó a Sayulita? Nací en Colima. Llegué a Sayulita hace 14 años porque había escuchado que Sayulita ofrecía más oportunidades y todos estaban mejor pagados aquí. Mi hermana vivía en San Ignacio y vine a visitarla y buscar trabajo. He estado viviendo en San Ignacio desde entonces.

Family Information? I live with my wife Gloria in San Ignacio and we have two children, a son named Heriberto and a daughter named Cecelia. I am one of 10 children altogether and many members of my family still live in Colima. I have three brothers who live in the United States.

¿Información de la familia? Vivo con mi esposa Gloria en San Ignacio y tenemos dos hijos. Un hijo que se llama Heriberto y una hija que se llama Cecilia. Soy uno de 10 hijos en total y muchos miembros de mi familia siguen en Colima. Tengo tres hermanos que fueron a vivir en Estados Unidos.

Work History? When I lived in Colima I began working in construction. I then started to work at a lime tree farm cutting the lime trees and gathering the limes. I did this for six years. When I came to Sayulita I started working again in construction since those jobs were readily available here and easy to find. After tiring from construction work, I wanted to have my own business which allowed me to spend more time with my family and set my own hours. I learned how to make churros from a teacher who taught me the recipe. I spent two months learning the recipe and how exactly to make churros. I began selling churros in Sayulita, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, San Pancho, Punta de Mita and Higuera Blanca.

¿Historia Laboral? Cuando vivía en Colima empecé a trabajar en las obras. Después comencé un trabajo en un rancho de limones y yo cortaba los limones y los juntaba. Trabajé en esto durante seis años. Cuando llegué a Sayulita empecé a trabajar otra vez en la construcción porque había muchos trabajos de ese tipo y trabajos en las obras eran fáciles de encontrar. Después de cansar de trabajar en la construcción, decidí que quería mi propio negocio para poder pasar más tiempo con mi familia y poner mi propio horario. Aprendí hacer churros de un maestro quien me enseñó la receta. Pasé dos meses aprendiendo como preparar la receta y como exactamente hacer churros. Empecé a vender churros en Sayulita, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, San Pancho, Punta de Mita y Higuera Blanca.

How often are you able to sell churros here in Sayulita? During the high season from October to May I try to sell churros in Sayulita every evening from dusk until I run out of churro mix. During the low season I come to Sayulita every Monday and Thursday. I make churros for events, weddings and quinceañeras. I enjoy doing events and travelling to other small towns nearby.

¿Qué tan seguido puede vender los churros aquí en Sayulita? Durante la temporada alta de octubre a mayo estoy en Sayulita vendiendo churros todos los días en las tardes cuando se oscurece hasta que se me acabe la mezcla de churros. Durante la temporada baja sólo llego a Sayulita los lunes y jueves. Preparo los churros para eventos, quinceañeras y bodas. Me gusta poder viajar a otros pueblos cercanos para hacer los eventos.

What do you like most about Sayulita? I like Sayulita as a place to raise children, spend time with family and it is a great place to live. Although I live in San Ignacio I consider myself a resident of Sayulita as well. There are a lot of opportunities in Sayulita and I have made many friends here. I like how everybody knows each other and it is a safe coastal town.

¿Qué te gusta más de Sayulita? Me gusta Sayulita porque es un buen lugar donde criar a los hijos, pasar tiempo con la familia y un buen lugar donde vivir. Aunque yo vivo en San Ignacio me considero como residente de Sayulita también. Hay muchas oportunidades en Sayulita y he hecho muchas amistades aquí. Me gusta que todos se conozcan y es un pueblo costal muy seguro.

Is there something you feel could be improved in Sayulita? Yes, I think the traffic in the downtown area of Sayulita has become a problem. During busy times of the year parking is almost impossible and I think there should be more parking available and perhaps wider streets in time.

¿Hay algo que cree que se puede mejorar en Sayulita? Si, creo que el tráfico en el centro se ha convertido en un problema. Durante las épocas del año más ocupadas casi es imposible encontrar estacionamiento y creo que debe de haber más estacionamiento disponible y tal vez calles más amplias en el futuro.

How do you imagine Sayulita in the future? I imagine that Sayulita will keep growing and remain a popular tourist destination. I think Sayulita and San Ignacio will one day be connected due to the growth in Sayulita. I believe that Sayulita will be a city one day.

¿Como imagina Sayulita en el futuro? Me imagino que Sayulita seguirá creciendo y seguirá siendo un destino turístico muy popular. Creo que eventualmente Sayulita y San Ignacio se unirán con todo el crecimiento que hay en Sayulita. Creo que algún día Sayulita será una ciudad.
