1. Where are you from and how long have you lived in Sayulita?
We're from San Francisco and have been coming to Sayulita for nine years; we bought a house six years ago, and moved here full time three years ago.

¿De dónde eres y por cuánto tiempo vives aquí?
Somos de San Francisco y hace nueve años que visitamos Sayulita. Hace seis años compramos una casa, y estamos viviendo aquí a pleno tiempo desde 2008.

2. What brought you to Sayulita?
We had been travelling to Mexico for 16 years, visiting different places. My husband, Mitch, is a high school teacher, so we would always travel in the summer months. A friend in the States read an article about Sayulita and told us we should check it out, even though she had never been here. So we came to Puerto Vallarta and spent three days in Sayulita.

¿Qué los trajo a Sayulita?
Habíamos viajado por muchas partes de México por 16 años, visitando diferentes lugares. Mi esposo, Mitch, es maestro de la secundaria, y siempre viajábamos en los meses de verano, durante sus vacaciones. Una amiga mía en los Estados Unidos leyó un artículo sobre Sayulita, y nos sugiero que viajáramos aquí, aunque ella no lo conocía, así que fuimos a Puerto Vallarta, y pasamos tres días en Sayulita.

3. What were your first impressions of Sayulita?
We loved it instantly. We felt the great energy here and for me it was the perfect mix of do-nothingness and sophistication. It had that balance, and that's important to me.

¿Y tus primeras impresiones de Sayulita?
Nos encantó instantaneamente. Sentimos la energía increíble aquí, y para mí el pueblo tenía el equilibrio perfecto de "no hacer nada" y la sofisticación, lo cual es importante para mí.

4. Were you planning to work when you decided to move here?
We were only planning to move here for a year, as Mitch was on sabbatical from his job, to learn Spanish. I'm a psychologist and I arranged to work p/t online. Two months into our stay we decided to move here for good, so Mitch quit his job and started doing property management p/t, and I'm still working at my job in the States, and also working p/t in the Farmer's Market. In September, Mitch will be teaching English literature at the American School in Puerto Vallarta, and our 12 yr old son Miller will be attending there as well, as he's now completing gr. 6 at CVIS.

¿Planeaban trabajar cuando se mudaron aquí?
Sólo planeábamos vivir en Sayulita un año, como Mitch estuvo de sabático de su escuela para aprender español. Soy psicóloga y trabajaba a medio tiempo con mi compañía por larga distancia con la computadora. Después de dos meses de vivir aqui, decidimos quedarnos para siempre, así que Mitch renunció su trabajo en California, y consiguió trabajo de gerente de propiedades. Sigo trabajando con mi empleo en California; también trabajo a medio tiempo en el Mercado del Pueblo los viernes. En septiembre, Mitch enseñará en la Escuela Americana de Puerto Vallarta, enseñando literatura inglesa. Nuestro hijo, Miller, también asistirá allá, como ahora está completando el nivel seis en CVIS.

5. How did you get involved in starting the Farmer's Market?
From the time I first came here, I wanted to start an organic market, not just to sell, but as a community event, and Sayulita is all about community. Then a year and a half ago, my friends Summer and Sandrita and I started to plan it, and her friend Melissa joined us. We wrote down our goals - to have organic, natural foods grown by people in Sayulita or close by, no more than an hour away, and to provide an opportunity for Mexican families to distribute their healthy wares.

¿Cómo empezaste a organizar el Mercado del Pueblo?
Desde el principio tenía la idea de organizar un mercado del pueblo no sólo para vender, sino para crear algo para la comunidad y Sayulita es muy unido en cuanto al sentido de comunidad. Hace un año y medio unas amigas, Summer y Sandrita y yo empezamos a planificar, y nuestra amiga, Melissa, nos reunió. Escribimos nuestras metas - proveer comida orgánica y natural producida por la gente de Sayulita o cerca, que vivía no más de una hora lejos, y también dar la oportunidad a familias mexicana s distribuir sus productos saludables.

6. How did you go about finding vendors?
We were looking for a venue and vendors at the same time. We believed the demand was there, so we talked to everyone we knew to spread the word, we spoke with Judge Noé, and the word got out. Our first location was in the police building, but that was too small, then we moved to the Casa de Cultura which is now closed, so our present location is in calle Pelícanos by the beach.

¿Cómo encontraron los vendedores?
Buscábamos vendedores y un lugar al mismo tiempo. Creíamos que la demanda estaba allí, así que hablamos con todo el mundo, hablamos con el delegado, Noé, y la idea se corrió la voz. El primer lugar para el mercado estuvo el edificio de policia, pero era muy pequeño y cambiamos a la Casa de Cultura, que ahora está cerrad. Hoy día nos localizamos en la calle Pelícanos cerca de la playa.

7. How long has the market been in business and is it profitable?
We started last year in April, and had five vendors at the first market, and after that word spread fast; now we have 40 vendors and a waiting list of five. The vendors each pay 50p for a table every Friday, and we use the money to sustain the market. We don't pocket a cent, and work as volunteers. Some typical expenses are: advertising, business cards, paying musicians, buying plants to beautify the space, etc.

¿Cuándo fue el primer mercado, y gana mucho dinero?
El primer mercado fue hace un año en abril, y tuvimos 5 vendedores. Ahora hay 40 y hay una lista de espera de 5 personas. Cada vendedor paga 50p por una mesa y utilizamos el dinero para sostener el mercado. No ganamos nada nosotras, trabajamos de voluntarias. Usamos el dinero ganado para anuncios, tarjetas de visita, los músicos, plantas para embellecer la calle, etc.

8. Are there plans to expand the market?
We have limited space, and we don't want to duplicate products, so we won't be accepting any more vendors this season, as our last market day is May 13th. We'll add more vendors as space allows based on the demand for their product, originality, and how long they've been on the waiting list.

¿Hay planes para ampliar el mercado?
Tenemos espacio limitado y no queremos duplicar productos, así que no aceptaremos nuevos vendedores esta temporada como el último día del mercado es el 13 de mayo. En el futuro adquirimos más vendedores si permita el espacio basado en la demanda para su producto, la originalidad, y la cantidad de tiempo en la lista de espera.

9. Are there any products you specifically need in the market?
We are desperately looking for an organic local fruit farmer, and hopefully we''ll have local fishermen with fresh fish for next season.

¿Hay unos productos que faltan en el mercado?
Buscamos un agricultor local de frutas orgánicas, y esperamos tener un pescadero local con pescado fresco para el invierno que entra.

10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Probably doing the same thing I'm doing, we're really happy here. I have a vision to start a community garden sometime in the future, which would be a free space for everyone interested, and a portion of the produce would be sold in the Friday market to help sustain it. I have a location in mind, and hopefully can start on that project next season.

¿Dónde te ves en cinco años?
Lo mejor haciendo lo mismo que ahora; estamos muy contentos aquí. Tengo una visión de iniciar un jardín de la comunidad con un porcentaje de las verduras vendidas en el mercado para ayudar a sostenerlo. Tengo un lugar en mente y espero empezar ese proyecto en la próxima temporada del turismo.
