Where are you from and how long have you been in Mexico? I grew up in Seattle and have been living in Mexico since 1983. I lived in Chihuahua and San Miguel de Allende, and from there we used to come to Sayulita to visit; then I moved here in 2003.

¿De dónde es y por cuánto tiempo está en México? Yo crecí en Seattle y estoy viviendo en México desde 1983. Yo vivía en Chihuahua y San Miguel de Allende, y de allí nos venía a visitar Sayulita; luego me mudé aquí en 2003.

How long have you been an artist? I've been interested in art since I was a teenager. At age five I won a coloring contest - it was during the Depression and A & P Market was giving away food as a prize. My aunts and uncles always used to tell me I would be an artist.

¿Por cuánto tiempo ha sido artista? Me interesaba en el arte desde que era adolescente. A los cinco años gané un concurso de colorear - fue durante la Depresión y el mercado A & P estaba regalando la comida como premio. Mis tíos y tías siempre me decían que sería un artista.

There are many different images in your art. What is your inspiration? I was living on an island near Mazatlán in 1982, and I wanted to impress the population by sitting by the side of the road and painting realism, then Isaw I was free ofin that, they had no idea what an American artist was doing there in the first place. Then one day I was trying to draw a tree and it came out looking like a lollipop.

Hay muchas imágenes diferentes en su arte. ¿Cuál es su inspiración? Vivía en una isla cerca de Mazatlán en 1982, y quería impresionar a la población por sentarme al lado de la carretera para pintar el realismo, y luego vi que estaba libre de esa idea, la gente no tenía ni idea de lo que un artista estadounidense estaba haciendo allí. Entonces un día estaba tratando de dibujar un árbol y salió como una piruleta.

What about the geometric images in your art? I was an ace in geometry and design high school, but I never wanted to make a career of it.

¿Y las imágenes geométricas en su arte? Era buen dibujador de geometría y diseño en la escuela secundaria, pero yo nunca quise hacer carrera de esas materias.

Education History? I have a BA in art from the University of Washington.

¿Educación? Tengo un licenciado en arte desde la Universidad de Washington.

Is this your first art gallery in Sayulita? The bookstore was my first art gallery, but I sold it because it was my second property and I had two more houses under construction. I lived like a type of hermit, I used to come into town just to shop.

¿Es ésta su primera galería de arte en Sayulita? La librería fue mi primera galería de arte, pero la vendí porque era la segunda casa que tenía y luego tenía dos casas más en construcción. Vivía como un tipo de ermitaño, que solía venir al pueblo sólo para comprar.

Family History? I'm separated from my Mexican wife, and have two children 18 and 12. We married when I was fifty and she was 18. She shares my property now, and last year the floods separated the property and created an island where she lives. It worked out well. I also have another son in Mendocino, California.

¿Historia Familiar? Estoy separado de mi esposa mexicana, y tengo dos niños de 18 y 12. Nos casamos cuando yo tenía cincuenta, y ella tenía 18 años. Comparte mi propiedad ahora y el año pasado las inundaciones separaron la propiedad y crearon una isla donde vive ella. Salió bien. También tengo otro hijo en Mendocino, California.

What are some significant changes you've seen in Sayulita? I've been coming here since the 90s, and there were no realtors at that time. There has been a lot of construction since then, and of course a great increase in prices.

¿Cuáles son los cambios significativos que ha observado en Sayulita? Estoy viendo aquí desde los años 90, y no hubo agentes de bienes raíces en esa época. Ha habido mucha construcción desde entonces, y por supuesto un gran aumento de precios.

9. What changes would you like to see in Sayulita? When I first came here I used to paint romantic pictures and write poems about the beach. I just heard that they're going to make the two main streets in Sayulita pedestrian thoroughfares only, once they finish the traffic bridge. I think that would be great.

¿Qué cambios le gustaría ver en Sayulita? Cuando llegué aquí pintaba cuadros románticos y escribía poemas sobre la playa. Acabo de oír que van a hacer las dos calles principales en Sayulita sólo vías peatonales, una vez que terminen el puente de tráfico. Creo que sería genial.

Your art is now for sale at your new gallery, #10 calle Jose Mariscal. Do you also sell your art in the United States? No, it's only for sale here. I haven't been back there in 17 yrs, and have no desire to go. My family comes here to visit.
