How old are you and where were you born? I was born at the hospital in San Francisco, Nayarit (San Pancho) 26 years ago. I have lived here my whole life except for a short time when I moved to Puerto Vallarta to work. My father named me Sayulita because he said that he loves this town.

Cuantos anios tienes y donde naciste? Naci en el hospital de San Francisco, Nayarit (San Pancho) hace 26 anios. Toda mi vida he vivido aqui, excepto cuando me mude a Puerto Vallarta por un corto tiempo a trabajar. Mi padre me puso Sayulita porque ama mucho este pueblo.

Family history? My mom is Petra Trujillo Lopez, She is housekeeper and also cooks Mexican food on weekends at my house. My dad is Jose Ramos Segura; he left us when I was 8 years old and now he has another family, so basicaly I was raised by a single parent. I have 3 sisters:  the oldest Cory Narda works as a housekeeper, Elizabeth also is a housekeeper and Daniela, the youngest is a housewife. I am the only one who is single.

Historia familiar? Mi mama es Petra Trujillo Lopez; ella trabaja como afanadora de limpieza y tambien cocina comida Mexicana los fines de semana en mi casa. Mi papa es Jose Ramos Segura; el nos dejo cuando yo tenia 8 anios y ahora tiene otra familia, entonces basicamente fui criada por una madre soltera. Tengo 3 hermanas:  la mayor Cory Narda trabaja de afanadora de limpieza, Elizabeth tambien y la menor, Daniela es ama de casa. Soy la unica soltera.

Work history? I started to work as a nanny when I was 10 years old to help with the house expenses. After a year, I worked at the old paleteria as a clerk. When I finished junior highschool I started my studies to be a hair stylist; at the same time that I worked as an assistant at a salon. When I got my diploma I worked in Bucerias for over a year. Then I decided that I wanted to speak another language and took English classes. I worked at El Corte for almost 3 years. Then I opened my salon, with rough times for customers I closed it and went to Puerto Vallarta to work at the Italian Hair Salon for more than a year. At the same time I worked as a hostess at La Dolce VIta.  I undestand Italian very well. I came back to Sayulita 2 years ago and I have worked since then as a babysitter, a clerk and recently open my salon again at my house.

Historia laboral? Comence a trabajar como ninera cuando tenia 10 anios para ayudar con los gastos de la casa. Despues de un ano, empece a trabajar como dependienta en la antigua paleteria. cuando termine la secundaria comence a estudiar al mismo tiempo que trabajaba para pagarme mis estudios. Una vez que obtuve mi diploma como estilista, comence a trabajar en Bucerias por un anio. Despues decidi que queria hablar otro idioma y tome clases de ingles. Trabaje en El Corte por 3 anios. Despues abri mi propio salon, pero con los tiempos dificiles decidi irme a Puerto Vallarta a trabajar a la Estetica Italiana por mas de un anio, al mismo tiempo trabajaba de hostess en la Dolce VIta. Entiendo italiano muy bien. Hace 2 anios que me regrese a vivir a Sayulita y desde entonces he trabajado como ninera, dependienta y recientemente abri mi salon otra vez en mi casa.

Education history? I studied since kindergarden through junior high school here in Sayulita at the public schools. I started high school at the UNE but I dropped out because of my work. I studied at the Professional Hair and Beauty Center in Puerto Vallarta. Every year I take lessons; in my profession always we have new techniques and I have to be updated.

Historia educativa? Estudie desde el jardin de ninos hasta la secundaria en Sayulita, en las escuelas publicas. Comence a estudiar la preparatoria abierta en la UNE pero me sali debido a mi trabajo. Estudie para estilista en el Centro Profesional en Estetica y Belleza de Puerto Vallarta, donde me recibi con honores. Cada anio tomo cursos de actualizacion, en mi carrera siempre hay nuevas tendencias y tengo que mantenerme al mismo nivel.

What do you like about Sayulita? Everything. All the time feels like vacation here. Since I am a local, I know everybody and everybody knows me. All my family is here. The beach, I surfed for a while and I love it. The surrounding mountains. Everything is so green.

Que es lo que te gusta de Sayulita? Todo. Todo el tiempo se siente como de vacaciones. Como soy local, conozco a toda la gente y toda la gente me conoce. Toda mi familia esta aqui. La playa, surfee un tiempo y me encanta. Las montanas aledanas, todo es tan verde.

What are the positive changes that you have seen in Sayulita? More jobs. more tourists. more study opportunities. No more gender discrimination; now there is equalty of jobs and school, no matter either for a male or a female.

Cuales son los cambios positivos que has visto en Sayulita?  mMtrabajo. mas turistas. mas oportunidades academicas. No mas discriminacion de genero, ahora hay mas igualdad con respecto al trabajo y la escuela ya sea para hombres o para mujeres.

What would you suggest to the people that comes for the first time to Sayulita? You will be back. They always come back. The water of Sayulita has something (laughing). OK. I guess that they like the people; we are very nice. I have friends who have been coming to Sayulita for over 30 years!  If you are coming to Sayulita, you have to try my mom’s Chiles Rellenos or at Antonia’s. Also at El Espresso for their delicious Chilaquiles and if you don’t eat at EL Costeno, it is like if you haven’t been here at all...Don Pedro’s is a great restaurant; try the pizzas and the pastas, you won’t regreat it.

Que le sugieres a la gente que viene por primera vez a Sayulita? que van a regresar. La gente siempre regresa. El agua de Sayulita tiene algo (risas). Esta bien. creo que la gente, los hace regresar, somos amables! Tengo amigos que han estado viniendo a sayulita desde hace 30 anios! Si vienen a Sayulita, tienen que probar los chiles rellenos de mi mama o con Antonia. tambien los deliciosos chilaquiles de El Espresso y si no comen en el El Costeno es que no vinieron a Sayulita. Don Pedro’s es un gran restaurante, prueben las pizzas y las pastas, no se arrepentiran.
