Where are you from and how long have you lived in Mexico?
I'm from Brookings, Oregon; we left there on Oct. 12, 1994, and came by boat to Puerto Vallarta. We rented a villa with a pool from a young, wealthy Mexican as it was the biggest place to berth our boat, and we ended up staying there for eight years. Our landlord let us use everything, and I used to take the kayak out every day.

Soy de Brookings, Oregon, salimos de allí el 12 de octubre de 1994, y llegamos en barco a Puerto Vallarta. Alquilamos una villa con piscina de un mexicano, ya que fue el mayor lugar para atracar el barco, y permanezemos allí durante ocho años. El propietario nos invitó a utilizar todo, y yo solía tomar el kayak a cabo todos los días.

How did you end up in living Sayulita?
Our 19-year-old grandson came to visit us in 2002. He didn't have much money but wanted to buy a surfboard and learn to surf, so my husband said that Sayulita was the best place. We started coming every day, saw land for sale, and eventually bought and built our house. We've been here ever since, and my husband passed away in 2009.

Nuestro nieto de 19 años vino a visitarnos en 2002. No tenía mucho dinero, pero quería comprar una tabla de surf y aprender surfear, así que mi esposo dijo que Sayulita era el mejor lugar. How long have you had your parrot, Bella?
We've had him for two-and-a-half years and brought him from the States. He's an African Gray, the most intelligent of parrots. We bought him from a farm that raises and sells birds, and we named him Bella because at first we thought he was female.

What have you been doing during your time in Mexico?
We travelled a lot when we first came to Mexico, and at that time we had a pet monkey who used to accompany us on our travels, but he died in 2002.

What kinds of activities do you do in Sayulita?
Mostly showing people around when family comes to visit. I have five kids, my husband had three and I had two; we were together since the 70's, so they're all mine.

Sobre todo paseo con todos cuando la familia viene a visitar - tengo cinco hijos, mi marido tuvo tres y yo tuve dos, estuvimos juntos desde los años 70, así que todo los hijos son mios.

Does your bird ever fly away when you take him out?
Not now, but the first time I took him to the beach about two years ago he flew far away from me and up high. Then he turned back and saw me, and he started to come down. He was about a block away and I started to run towards him. He had alighted on a man with a beard, my husband used to have a beard, and was crawling up his pant leg to his shoulder. He (the man) was the delighted.

¿Su pájaro nunca vuele al sacarlo de la casa?
Ahora no, pero la primera vez que lo llevé a la playa hace dos años, voló lejos de mí y en lo alto. Entonces se volvió a verme, y comenzó a bajar. Fue a una cuadra de distancia y empecé a correr hacia él. Se apeó en un hombre con barba, mi marido solía tener una barba, y caminaba por la pierna del pantalón a su hombro. Él (el hombre) estaba encantado.

What are some significant changes that you've seen in Sayulita?
There are more wealthy people coming in and exploiting the Mexicans and getting rich off the tourists, but a lot of businesses close after a couple months.

Hay gente rica que viene y aprovechan a los mexicanos y se hacen ricos de los turistas, pero una gran cantidad de esos negocios cierran después de un par de meses.

What are some improvements you'd like to see in Sayulita?
I'd like to see something done about the problem of theft. I had a quad stolen a day before leaving for vacation; someone had to have known of my plans. When we first came to Mexico, we never used to lock up our boat - the police can't seem to do much. Also the noise level is very high, there is a lot of drum beating and bars should have more controls for late night noise.

¿Cuáles son algunas mejoras que le gustaría ver en Sayulita?
Me gustaría ver que se haga algo sobre el problema del robo. Tuve un quad robado un día antes de salir de vacaciones, alguien tenía que haber sabido de mis planes. Cuando llegamos por primera vez a México, nunca encerramos nuestro barco - la policía no puede hacer mucho. También el nivel de ruido es muy alto, hay un montón de tambores y los bares deben ser más controlados de ruido de la noche.

I do have a different lifestyle; I was lucky to have stopped working at 49, and when we were laid off (my husband and I are both engineers), we decided to sail to Mexico. We always liked exotic animals. When you live here year-round, the Mexicans have a different respect for you, they treat you like one of their own.
