Imagine What $10 Will Bring!

Please read this!  This column goes to (latest count) 7,753 subscribers! That's a lot of people. Many are homeowners, others have come to Sayulita more than once and probably care about the town. As subscribers, I know that you have read about all the programs that Grupo Pro Sayulita has to help the town.This past March, we had a super successful Fiesta-Fundraiser and raised almost $60,000 USD in total. Still, by the time we spread it over all of our programs, it's not enough.

If you are a homeowner, you know that what you pay for annual property taxes won't buy you dinner at a good restaurant. If you are a visitor, no hotel/casa/restaurant tax is charged that goes to our town. Unfortunately, there's no legal local government that can collect taxes from residents or visitors. That's why GPS volunteers hold a fundraiser each year, sell books at the market and solicit donations. How wonderful it would be if we could collect a $2 visitor's fee/donation from every non-resident car or visitor who comes through our new entrance gate.

But we have you! Just imagine! If 7,753 subscribers offered us just $10 per month-- (125 pesos), do you know how much that would total  in a year? $10 a month x 12 months x 7,753 people = $930,360!  Wow, almost a million bucks!

What could we do each year with that money?

Off the top of my head, I'd give $200,000 to get more police at critical points and really make an end to tourist crime.  $100,000 would solve problems and needs at all the public schools. $100,000 a year would also keep all our streets super clean--maybe with a street sweeper going around a few times a week. $100,000 would solve many issues with emergency response (even though we are soon getting our first ambulance/fire station) and we would save lives with a better lifeguard program on the beach. $50,000 would certainly help with the Salud, single mothers, retired residents and all sorts of social services now underfunded. For sure, $50,000 would solve our trash, recycling and clean air issues. Local government is essential and $50,000 a year would keep the Delegacion Municipal in business with adequate staff.

I've dealt with all the main issues and I've only spent $650,000!

There are special projects where we could allocate funds.  For example, to help the after-school sports and music clubs/teams, we need a schoolbus to take kids to other towns; now they ride in open pickup trucks--a very dangerous practice. We need new playgrounds at the baseball field, especially one for little tots. Many kids are begging for a skateboard park too.

We could bring more academic and cultural programs into town, perhaps help the Cultural Center. And parking? Yes, we could build two parking lots, get a shuttle business into service (with guided tours as well) and get control of our centro. My list goes on, but you get the idea.

I wonder--can this take off like the 99% protests? Our GPS Web site (www.ProSayulita.org) is all set up to take donations--please give it a go. If we could get even a 75% participation rate, just imagine how we could preserve the charm of Sayulita while solving our critical problems!

Muchos son propietarios, otros han venido a Sayulita más de una vez y probablemente cuidado acerca del pueblo. Y como suscriptores, yo sé que ha leído acerca de todos los programas que Grupo Pro Sayulita hace para ayudar el pueblo. Este marzo pasado, nosotros tuvimos a un súper Fiesta-Recogedor de fondos exitoso y levantamos casi $60.000 (EEUU) en el suma. Todavía, cuando lo esparcimos más de todos nuestros programas, no es suficiente.

Si es un propietario, sabe que lo que usted paga por impuestos sobre la propiedad inmobiliaria anuales no le comprará cena en un restaurante bueno. Si es un turista, ningún hotel/casa/el impuesto del restaurante es cargado que va a nuestro pueblo. Y desafortunadamente, no hay administración municipal legal que puede reunir los impuestos de residentes ni visitantes. Por eso voluntarios de GPS le tienen a un recogedor de fondos cada año, venden los libros en el mercado, y solicitan donativos.

¡Pero se imagina sólo! ¿Si 7.732 suscriptores nos ofrecieron sólo $10 por mes -- (120 pesos), sabe usted cuánto que totalizaría un año? ¡$10 por mes X 12 meses X 7.753 personas = $930.360! ¡Ah, casi un millón dolares!

¿Qué podríamos hacer nosotros cada año con ese dinero?

De la parte superior de la cabeza, yo daría $200.000 en conseguir a más policía en puntos críticos y hacer realmente un fin al crimen del turista. $100.000 resolverían problemas y necesitarían en todos las escuelas del público. $100.000 por año también mantendrían todas nuestras calles súper limpias -- quizá con un barrendero que andando alrededor unos tiempos por semana. $100.000 resolverían muchos asuntos con respuesta de emergencia (aunque nosotros pronto consigamos nuestro primer ambulancia/parque de bomberos) y guardaríamos vidas con un mejor programa de vigilante en la playa. $50.000 ciertamente ayudarían con el Salud, con madres únicas, con residentes jubilados, y con todo tipo de servicios sociales ahora infradotaron. Seguramente, $50.000 resolverían nuestra basura, reciclando y limpiarían asuntos aéreos. La administración municipal es esencial y $50.000 por año mantendrían el Delegacion Municipal en el negocio con el personal adecuado.

¡He tratado con todos los principales asuntos, y con yo sólo he gastado $650.000!

Hay proyectos especiales donde podríamos asignar fondos. Por ejemplo, para ayudar los golpea/equipos extraescolares de deporte y música, nosotros necesitamos un autobús escolar para tomar los niños a otros pueblos; ahora cabalgan en furgonetas abiertas -- una práctica muy peligrosa. Necesitamos nuevos campos de juegos en el campo del béisbol, especialmente uno para tragos pequeños. Muchos niños ruegan un parque de la tabla de patín también.

Traeríamos programas más académicos y culturales en el pueblo, ayudan quizás el Centro de la Cultura. ¿Y estacionamiento? Sí, podríamos construir dos gran cantidad de estacionamiento, conseguir un negocio de transbordador en el servicio (con visitas guiadas también) y tomar el control de nuestro centro. Y mi lista pasa, pero cree.

¿Me pregunto -- puede quitar esto como las 99% de protestas? Nuestro sitio web GPS (www.ProSayulita.org) está listo arriba tomar donativos -- por favor lo da un va. ¡Si podríamos desquitarnos una 75% de tasa de participación, se imagina sólo cómo podríamos preservar el encanto de Sayulita al resolver nuestros problemas críticos!
