If you own a house here, instead of paying a few thousand dollars a year in property taxes, your annual property tax bill won't even pay for dinner for two in Mexico!  So while much of life here is heavenly (sun, beach, food and fun), services are not what they need to be.  The town needs some help.  That's where Grupo Pro Sayulita comes in.

For those of us involved with Grupo Pro Sayulita, we lose sight of the fact that many people are new, and that many residents are not so involved as to follow the activities of the town's main civic group. So for those who know, perhaps this is old news. For many, it might be new information. I'll be brief.

Grupo Pro Sayulita is an all-volunteer organization, registered in Mexico as a non-profit.  We have a legal structure consisting of a board of directors, elected annually by voting members (in 2011, we had 40 voting members and an elected board of 7).  But the practical side of Grupo Pro Sayulita is that many people volunteer their time and efforts to make things happen for the better.  During the season, we hold weekly meetings (Wednesdays at noon at Calypso). Everyone is invited to attend, to participate and to share ideas and news.

We have various committees that have helped over many years.  We concentrate on helping the public schools, through Sayulimipia in keeping the town and beach clean and doing recycling and expanding sewer connections, helping with emergency response issues, and helping other groups doing good things for the town.  We also headed up an initiative to increase the police presence in town.  In all, we want what most residents and visitors want- a safe and healthy town where that "Mexican" flavor is kept alive.

Most importantly to realize, we have no office and no paid administrative staff-- all our efforts and funds go directly to our programs.  We are not the government, but we try to fill the gaps for important programs.  We work with town leaders and some of our volunteers are very much "on-the-ground," although much of what we do is to give monetary support for worthy services.

How do we raise funds?  Primarily through memberships, donations, and ticket sales for our big "Social-Event-Of-The-Season" Fiesta Fundraiser.  This year, it's on Wednedsay, March 14.   Our membership, donation and ticket drive, usually concentrated in Janauary and February leading up to our Fiesta, brings in the bulk of our funding.  So that's why the next 60 days is so important to our organization, and in a sense, to you.

Our March Fiesta is totally underwritten by Don Pedro's restaurant; their generous donation allows all the money from this event to go directly into town programs.  If you see Damien Porter or Nick Parrillo, please give them a big "thank you" for their support.

And I can't end without thanking more than 60 volunteers who were active in one way or another last year.  Often, many don't get the thanks that they deserve, but I want you all to know that everyone who has or is helping GPS deserves a pat on the back.

Cómo utilizamos sus donaciones y contribuciones

Si tiene una casa en Sayulita, en vez de pagar miles de dólares al año en impuestos sobre la propiedad, su cuenta anual de impuestos es tan poco dinero, ¡ni paga por una cena para dos en México!  Mientras que mucha de la vida aquí está celestial (el sol, la playa, el alimento y la diversión), muchas veces los servicios no son lo que deben ser. El pueblo necesita alguna ayuda, y ahí entra Grupo Pro Sayulita.

Para nosotros que estamos involucrados con Grupo Pro Sayulita, olvidamos que muchas personas nuevas vienen todos los años, y que muchos residentes no siguen las actividades del principal grupo cívico del pueblo. Para los que saben, quizás lo que escribo es noticias antiguas. Para otros, quizás sea nueva información. Seré breve.

Grupo Pro Sayulita es una organización de voluntarios, registrado en México como una organización sin fines lucrativos. Tenemos una estructura legal que consiste en una junta directiva, elegida anualmente por miembros (en 2011, tuvimos a 40 miembros electorales y una directiva elegida de 7). Pero el lado práctico de Grupo Pro Sayulita es que muchas personas ofrecen su tiempo y energía para mejorar la vida en nuestro pueblo. Durante la temporada, tenemos reuniones semanales (los miércoles a mediodía en Calypso). Todos son invitados a asistir, participar y compartir las ideas y noticias.

Tenemos varios comités que han ayudado por muchos años. Concentramos en ayudar las escuelas del público, para crear Sayulimipia a mantener el pueblo y las playas limpias, recoger el reciclaje y mejorar las conexiones expansivas de alcantarilla.  Ayudamos con asuntos de la respuesta de emergencia, y trabajamos con otros grupos que hacen cosas buenas para el pueblo. También dirigimos una iniciativa a aumentar la presencia de policía en el pueblo. En total, deseamos lo que los residentes y visitantes desean- un pueblo seguro y sano donde ese sabor "mexicano" es mantenido vivo.

Es importante incluir que no tenemos oficina, tampoco una administración pagada -- todos nuestros esfuerzos y los fondos van directamente a nuestros programas. No somos el gobierno, pero tratamos de proveer los programas importantes que faltan. Trabajamos con los líderes del pueblo y mucho de lo que hacemos es dar un apoyo monetario para servicios dignos.

¿Cómo recaudamos fondos? Principalmente a través de membresías, los donativos, y ventas de boletas para nuestra gran fiesta de recaudación de fondos,  "el evento social de la temporada." Este año la fiesta se llevará a cabo miércoles el 14 de marzo. Nuestra asociación y el donativo y el boleto manejan, generalmente concentrado en Janauary y febrero que llevan a nuestra Fiesta, introduce la mayoría de nuestra financiación. Entonces por eso los próximos 60 días son tan importantes a nuestra organización, y en un sentido, a usted.

Nuestra Fiesta de marzo es asegurada totalmente por el restaurante de Don Pedro; su donativo generoso permite todo el dinero de este acontecimiento para ir directamente en programas de pueblo. Si ve Damien Porter o Nick Parrillo, por favor les dan un grande "gracias" para su apoyo.

Y yo no puedo terminar sin dar gracias a más de 60 voluntarios que fueron activos en de un solo sentido ni otro último año. A menudo, muchos no consiguen el gracias que merecen, pero deseo que sepan que todos que tiene o ayuda GPS merece una palmada en la espalda.
