They've never won the Stanley Cup, and have finally made it to the playoffs. After a 17-year hiatus, the Vancouver Canucks have made it to the final round of the Stanley Cup, and Canadians, especially Western Canadians and Vancouverites in particular, are really pumped about the prospect of watching some very exciting hockey over the next week or so, even while vacationing in Sayulita.

For those of you (mostly Americans) who don't follow the game or prefer basketball, bear with me a moment. It's in our blood you see, and even if your team didn't make it to the playoffs, you root for the Canadian team, who cares if most of the players are American; it's the place that gets the honor, the geographical location, and in the end it's a good game of hockey we enjoy, no matter who's playing.

Take for example game #7 of the first round of the Western Conference finals, between the Canucks and the Chicago Blackhawks. The "heart attack" game as my son described it, a Montrealer for eight years now, but still a diehard Canucks fan.  It was the final game, to break the 3/3 tie, and the Canucks especially were out for blood, as they had been beaten out of the finals by the Blackhawks two years in a row! The bar was full of raucous Canadians cheering and stamping on their team. The woman sitting next to me cautiously asked if she'd be okay, after all she was from Chicago, her partner from Detroit. No worries I reassured her, you'll be fine, we just get really excited about hockey.

Well into the third period, the Canucks had a 2-to-1 lead on Chicago. The Canadians were impatient, smelling the victory, Gabriel roaming the bar nervously, all of us on edge. Looks like the kind of game where the other team is going to score late in the third period and force the game into overtime, I turned to comment to the woman from Chicago, but she had quietly left the premises.

And that's exactly what happened. Barely two minutes left in the third, Chicago scored and tied the game to a stunned Vancouver arena, ready to party down in victory. It'll be quick and dirty, I said, while we waited the interminable 15 minutes for the next period; the Canucks will take it in the first few minutes of overtime. And so they did, to a riotous round of applause, heard I'm sure, all the way from the west coast of Mexico.

Fast forward to the next nailbiter, the final game of the second round, Canucks against the San José Sharks. Luongo, as usual, let in a Shark's goal at the beginning of the third period handing the lead to the Sharks, 2-to-1. As the final minutes, then seconds of the third ticked by, it looked like the Sharks had it, then Kesler scored to tie the game at 13 seconds left in the third period!!  Everyone went nuts, and that's what I love about hockey, it's exciting until the last second. The first overtime period produced nothing but exhausted players and fans; halfway through the second period of overtime the Canucks scored for a 3-2 win to clinch their place in the Stanley cup finals, much to the relief of Jo-Ann, nodding off beside me. It was well after midnight and we all stumbled into the warm, tropical Sayulita night, tired but thrilled - the Canucks had made it to the final round.

The first game of the final playoffs between the Canucks and the Boston Bruins started last Wednesday. It was a brawling, grinder of a game with both teams evenly matched, and once again the Canucks didn't disappoint, scoring the first goal 20 seconds before the end of the third period to win the game 1/0. Era bien pasada la medianoche y todos tropezaron en la noche cálida y tropical de Sayulita, cansados ​​pero contentos - ¡los Canucks había llegado a la ronda final!
