"Turn left at the next road past the Big Rock." These were part of our directions to our vacation casita on our very first trip to Sayulita. For many years, the "Big Rock" on calle Ninos Heroes (the street on your right on the way from the plaza, just before Rollie's restaurant), has been used as a landmark and a point of reference. The rock has, in the past, also been the site for graffiti and trash. One recent winter upon arrival in Sayulita, my husband and I were surprised and thrilled to see the newly landscaped garden surrounding the "Big Rock" (or the "Big Rock Community Garden," as I now like to call it). The garden is now well established and flourishing, but we had yet to find out who was caring for it and the story behind the garden. I was able to connect with neighbor Summer Helms this week; she and Cap Sparling and Hoot Owl turn out to be the masterminds and the mystery gardeners. Here is the story of the garden in Summer's words:

"The rock has always been a landmark in our neighborhood, mainly used for giving driving and walking directions. One day (in 2008) when I was removing the graffiti from the rock, Cap, my neighbor and friend, walked by and we started talking about the rock and how cool it would be to beautify it. Around that time, Cap and I were also working collaboratively to cobblestone all three of the roads in our neighborhood. It was a lot of work but it really opened my eyes as to how much you can accomplish as a neighborhood. We decided to share the cost of installing a brick wall around the rock and the few plants that were there. Cap said he would sponsor the project with some money for plants. The next day I went and picked out a bunch of plants (you can do a lot with 2000 pesos - wow!) I also bought a hose and some fertilizer. Turned out, a bunch of the plants I bought were not well-suited for direct sunlight, so I went back and bought an "India" (ficus family?) that should grow huge and provide lots of shade.

 

In the meantime, a lot of the plants were really suffering. Around that time, I was getting married and Hoot Owl, a friend of mine from several years prior, offered to care for the rock plants as a wedding gift. I had no idea she was going to take that on! She moved a lot of the plants around and added all the Nopales and the other cactus. She also weeded and watered and continues to do that and much more, whenever she comes to visit from BC. I'd say one of the biggest challenges is maintaining the garden when Hoot Owl is not here. We have had the hose 'borrowed' many times and asked the neighbors to water but it does not really happen."

 

Summer continues on to say: "After the cobblestone project that we did in our neighborhood, an idea I've had for maintaining landscaping and other "communal" projects, would be to form an ad hoc neighborhood board with a small annual fee to cover these general costs. Since taxes and other maintenance costs are so low (relatively speaking) here in Mexico, it seems that a small annual neighborhood board fee would be a worthwhile cost. Fees could be used for common garden areas and landscaping, trash areas and collection, cobblestone work, road maintenance, and perhaps small neighborhood parks."

Now that's what community is all about. If you are a Ninos Heroes neighbor or visitor with a green thumb, give the Big Rock Community Garden a little love while you are in town. Hoot Owl relays that the Nopales make good eating, too!

La Roca Grande Jardín Comunitario

"Gire a la izquierda en la siguiente carretera más allá de la gran roca." Estas fueron parte de nuestras direcciones a nuestra casita de vacaciones en nuestro primer viaje a Sayulita. Durante muchos años, el "Gran Roca" en la calle Niños Héroes (la calle a la derecha en el camino de la plaza, justo antes de restaurante de Rollie), se ha utilizado como un hito y un punto de referencia. La roca tiene, en el pasado, también ha sido el sitio para el graffiti y basura. Un invierno recientes a su llegada a Sayulita, mi esposo y yo estábamos sorprendidos y emocionados de ver el jardín recién ajardinada que rodea el "Gran Roca" (o el "Gran Roca Jardín Comunitario," como ahora les gusta llamarlo). El jardín ya está bien establecida y floreciente, pero todavía tenía que descubrir quién fue el cuidado de ella y la historia detrás del jardín. Tuve la oportunidad de conectar con el vecino de Summer Helms esta semana, ella y Cap Sparling y Hoot Owl resultan ser los autores intelectuales y los jardineros misterio. Esta es la historia del jardín de las palabras de Summer:

Cap dijo que iba a patrocinar el proyecto con un poco de dinero para las plantas. Al día siguiente fui y recogió un puñado de plantas (se puede hacer mucho con 2000 pesos - wow!) También compré una manguera y algunos fertilizantes. Resultó que un puñado de las plantas que compré no eran muy adecuados para la luz solar directa, así que volví y compré una "India" (familia ficus?) Que deben crecer enorme y proporcionan una gran sombra.

 

Mientras tanto, muchas de las plantas fueron realmente sufren. Por ese tiempo, me iba a casar y Hoot Owl, un amigo mío de hace varios años antes, se ofreció a cuidar de las plantas de rock como regalo de bodas. No tenía idea que iba a tener que, en! Ella se mudó muchas de las plantas a su alrededor y se agrega a todos los nopales y cactus otros. También eliminados y dio de beber y lo sigue haciendo eso y mucho más cada vez que viene a visitar desde British Columbia. Yo diría que uno de los mayores desafíos es mantener el jardín cuando Hoot Owl no está aquí. Hemos tenido la manguera "prestado" muchas veces y pidió a los vecinos al agua, pero esto no sucede en realidad. "

 

Summer continúa a decir: "Después de que el proyecto de adoquines que hicimos en nuestro barrio, una idea que he tenido para el mantenimiento de jardinería y otros" proyectos comunes ", sería formar un comité ad hoc de barrio con una pequeña cuota anual para cubrir los gastos generales. Dado que los impuestos y otros costos de mantenimiento son muy bajos (relativamente hablando) aquí en México, parece que una pequeña cuota anual junta vecinal sería un costo que vale la pena. Los cargos podrían ser utilizados para zonas ajardinadas comunes y jardines, zonas de basura y de recogida, el trabajo empedradas, mantenimiento de carreteras y parques de la vecindad tal vez pequeño. "

Ahora que es lo que la comunidad se trata. Si usted es un vecino Niños Héroes o visitante con un pulgar verde, procederá a la Big Rock Jardín Comunitario un poco de amor mientras se encuentra en la ciudad. Hoot Owl relés que los nopales que comer bien, también!
