Both my U.S. hometown and Sayulita have numerous sports teams for kids of all ages. In North Adams, we even have a summer collegiate baseball team. All sports are big in most small towns, and Sayulita is no exception. Fields are definitely in better shape in North Adams than in Sayulita. Certainly, there has been talk about how to best fix up Sayulita's playing facilities for the kids - from the playgrounds to the baseball, soccer, basketball areas and perhaps someday for skateboards and tennis courts. This past season, excess dirt from the rivermouth (that had washed down in last year's flooding) was used to raise the field; let's hope that when the grass grows and is cut, there's a big improvement.

Volunteers occasionaly offer to bring down used and new sports equipment - even balls are cheaper in the U.S. Someday, my dream is to help fund a town bus, which could be used to transport kids in the morning to high school and in the afternoon to transport various teams to their "away" games (bands need transportation to their out-of-town venues as well).  Currently, kids pile in the back of a pickup truck and that's too dangerous to allow to continue.

Personally, I'm an odd male. I'm just not into professional TV sports watching. Players are just playing for the team with the biggest paycheck. However, I love to see a game with school or town spirit and I love to throw a ball for fun, not that I get a chance often, except with our grandson who at four-and-a-half is a bit small for serious catching. Last year, I was asked to throw the opening pitch for one of the colligiate games in North Adams. I panicked. I was never a pitcher and I hadn't thrown a hardball for decades. I went online to learn pitching techniques, where I also saw too many embarrassing "opening pitches" by red-faced celebrities. A friend came over with mitts and balls and we practiced for three hours, risking a sore arm for sure. Well, my moment came. I was introduced by loudspeaker, walked to the mound, waved to the crowd and made my pitch. A strike! Not bad, I thought, as I hurried off the field with a smile. In reality, it was beginners luck. I still have the local newspaper photo and clipping above my desk. But that baseball experience gave me an idea!

I'd love to bring a baseball team of Sayulita kids with a couple of chaperones to North Adams. Just imagine, they would land in New York City, spend a day or two touring the sights and seeing the skyscrapers, and then take a bus up to the Berkshires. They would see theater and art here, beautiful hills, middle class homes and small New England towns. Then they would play baseball with a team here. What a wonderful summer week that would be! And on the flipside, how much fun it would be for that North Adams team to visit Sayulita during one of their winter vacations!

My bet is that if I could raise $5,000 in Sayuilita, I could find North Adams residents and businesses willing to match that. What an educational experience that would be for ten kids from Sayulita!

El béisbol en Sayulita y los EEUU

Mi pueblo de origen en los EEUU y Sayulita tienen numerosos equipos de deporte para niños de todas las edades. En North Adams, hay un equipo colegiado del béisbol de verano. Todos los deportes son importantes en la mayoría de los pueblos pequeños, y Sayulita no es excepción. Los campos son definitivamente en mejor forma en North Adams que en Sayulita. Ciertamente, ha habido habla de mejorar y arreglar las instalaciones deportivas en Sayulita donde juegan los niños - los campos de béisbol, futbol, áreas de baloncesto y quizás algún día un parque para tlas tablas de patín. Muchas veces los voluntarios ofrecen traer equipo de deporte de la segunda mano, hasta las pelotas son más baratas en EEUU.  Algun dia, mi sueño es proveer un camión del pueblo, que podría ser utilizado para transportar a los niños a la escuela por la mañana, y por la tarde, transportar a varios equipos a sus paritidos en otros pueblos (las bandas necesitan transporte a lugares fuera de Sayulita también).  Los niños amontonan detrás en una furgoneta; es demasiado peligroso permitir continuar.

Personalmente, no me interesa mucho mirar los deportes professionales en la televisión. Los jugadores juegan sólo para el equipo con el cheque de pago más grande. Sin embargo, adoro ver un partido con espíritu de la escuela o del pueblo, y adoro tirar una pelota para divertirme, que hago a menudo con mi nieto de 4 años. El año pasado, me pidieron tirar el primer lanzamiento para uno de los partidos de la universidad en North Adams. Me asusté. Nunca fui lanzador, y había tirado un béisbol por décadas. Fui en línea para aprender técnicas, como habia visto demasiado avergonzados celebridades al lanzar el primero en béisbol. Un amigo vino sobre con guante y pelota y practicamos durante tres horas, arriesgándome un brazo adolorido. Bien, llegó mi momento. Fue introducido por altavoz, acercó al monticulo de bateo, salude a la multitud y lancé la pelota. ¡éxito! No tan mal, me fui corriendo del campo con una sonrisa. En realidad, fue el suerte de principiantes. Todavía tengo la foto periódico local encima de mi escritorio. ¡Pero aquella experiencia de béisbol me dio una idea!

Me encantaría traer un equipo del béisbol de niños de Sayulita con un par de acompañantes a North Adams. Imagínense, aterrizarían en la ciudad de Nueva York, pasarían un día o dos a conocer los sitios famosos y ver los rascacielos, y luego tomarían un camión hasta los Berkshires.
