She finished grade 12 in Tabasco, Mexico and then returned to Toronto to study travel and tourism.  After graduation, she worked for two years in Los Cabos, Mexico in resorts and then moved to Sayulita. Private Security Proposal for Sayulita

On Thursday, February 2nd, Sayulita's new town delegate, Hector Piña, along with a representative, Pablo Orozco of a private security company, Corporativo Nacional de Seguridad Privada, hosted and organized a community meeting with homeowners of Sayulita to discuss security issues in Sayulita, especially neighborhoods that have been experienced burglaries lately. These concerns come after an increase in petty theft over the past few months.

Sayulita's downtown construction project to improve the roads, sidewalks, and town plaza is underway. Here are some photos of the progress for our readers who are not currently in Sayulita. Despite the few obstacles, most businesses are still open serving customers in Sayulita. Workers are hustling as the governor of Nayarit has declared that work should be completed by March 2012.

It's that time of year again; a time to look back on the year just passed and to look forward to a new year ahead, as Sayulita and the entire world celebrate New Year's Eve this Saturday, December 31st, 2011 and New Year's Day, Sunday, January 1st, 2012. Many stores, businesses and banks will be closed Monday, January 2nd, for the long weekend and national holiday.

On December 10th and 11th, Sayulita locals had the opportunity to participate in the second annual lifeguard training program in Sayulita. The program, founded last year and organized by retired firefighter, Brian Singleton, together with the Zachary Chambers Foundation, Civil Protection in Bucerias, and Sayulita's school of paramedics, taught by Dr. Moy Cuevas, hosted two days of intensive lifeguard training.

On Sunday, November 27th, the town plaza was the official place for local Sayulita residents to cast their vote for the new town judge, also known as the delegado, for Sayulita. The town voted between the Red Party and the Green Party, and Hector Manuel Piña Ortega, representing the Green Party, was announced as the winner of the polls on Sunday night. Hector Manuel Piña Ortega has lived in Sayulita for the last three and half years and runs the hardware store, Ferremateriales Sayulita, located on Calle Miramar.

Sayulita resident, Barbara Nelson, began a donation program a few years ago to help provide local Mexican families with items such as used clothing, books, toys, sports equipment and other articles of interest or need. Barbara encourages visitors and foreign residents this season to bring down any of the above articles you may no longer have use for. The drop-off center is located in the Pacific Coast Golf Car office on Calle Revolucion in downtown Sayulita.

New Bar Curfew and Alcohol Sale Regulations

Bahia de Banderas' Municipal President, Rafael Cervantes, has imposed new regulations regarding alcohol sales. As of this week, all bars, nightclubs and business that sell alcohol must close their doors by 1:00 a.m., in the entire Bay of Banderas area. Local Sayulita bars have been offering last call at 12:30 a.m.,  and are now required by law to be completely closed, lights out to the public by 1:00 a.m.

The "Invest in Sayulita" promotional tour organized and hosted by Roger and Linda Burten of Sayulita Investment Realty, turned out to be a true success. The goal was accomplished to firstly promote Sayulita as a safe tourist destination in Mexico and, secondly, to promote the range of real estate investment opportunities in Sayulita. "To sum up everything about the Tour and the general response we received, we would do it again, without question," said Roger Burten, who spoke in ten different cities in Oregon, Washington and western Canada.
Plans Underway to Improve Beachfront Road

Plans to put gravel on the Calle Caracol beachfront road, from the entrance of Villa Amor Hotel to Punta Sayulita Beach House, are underway. Organizer Barbara Roche Fierman is encouraging community involvement to improve the road, which is currently in bad shape after the rainy season, which has caused potholes and washed away much of the current dirt road. The estimated cost for improvements is $17,000 USD, which also includes a concrete curb along the ocean side of road.
Halloween and Day of the Dead Celebrations in Sayulita

The Sayulita plaza was decorated with altars lit with candles, homages to those passed away, in celebration of El Dia de Los Muertos celebrated on November 2nd and all across Mexico. The first annual Day of the Dead festival and contest took place on October 31st - November 2nd; local community members and businesses were encouraged to arrange and decorate their own traditional Day of the Dead altar in the town plaza.

CVIS Language Programs for the Community

Last month, the Costa Verde International School initiated an ESL (English as a Second Language) program to help promote the international, multicultural and bi-lingual community coming together. The English language classes began last year, with four students, relates Nancy Avila, the language programs co-ordinator. It was in September of this year that the classes really kicked into gear, with 45 students enrolling in the program and three teachers assigned to various levels of English. September classes were offered free of charge to get community members interested. The classes, which are open to anyone over twelve, will continue throughout the year at $400 pesos/month. Beginner, intermediate and advanced levels are taught by language teachers, Nicki, Jocelyn and Eleanora. "We are making Costa Verde a full community center, a place where the whole community can come together to share, teach and learn about each other," says Nancy, who also stresses the importance of language in our diverse community.
